Inspect the Mattress and Bed Linens
Look for Reddish or Rusty Tints: Bed bugs feed on blood and therefore usually leave behind blood stains on sheets or body parts, which overnight do get crushed and left on mattresses.
Scrutinize the Seams and Tags: Bed bugs usually lurk in the closed seams, corners or cracks of box springs and mattresses.
Look for Eggs or Eggshells: Eggs of bed bugs are white in color, 1 millimeter wide. They are often hidden below or inside something.
Search for Living Bed Bugs
This is the adult form which is about five mm in length and reddish in hue with an oval shape. They are not hard to spot but are usually inactive during the day and thus conceal themselves.
Bed bugs tend to seek shelter in the seams of the mattresses, crevices of the furniture, boards, or the frame of the bed, wherever they can find close proximity to sleeping people.
Search for Fecal Markings that are Dark and Tiny
Bed bugs alongside bed intrusion will leave their droppings behind; these droppings are tiny black or dark brown and look like dust or ink spots, and can be smeared nearby where they are in hiding, areas like inside sheets.
Flash Lights
Bed bugs can be found hiding in dark, secluded areas. Therefore, have a flashlight handy while checking tight spaces in bed frames, furniture, or on baseboards.
Look for Furniture and Clutter
Bedbugs can be hidden in the dark corners of furniture or electric sockets, under baseboards, or even behind a picture frame. Examine the dust of available furniture like dressers, nightstands, and other upholstered items.
Bed Bug Interceptors
These are traps which are placed at the extreme ends of sleeping places with the movement of Bedbugs in and out of beds being the primary purpose. They help in knowing if there is any bedbug activity.
Evidence in the Form of Odor
With time a bed bug colony can be so large that it begins to produce strong odors that are unpleasant and associated with mold. This foul smell is usually produced by the pheromones of bedbugs.
As you go through the above steps, your chances of discovering bedbugs will be higher than if you went through them lightly. When in doubt it is better to book an appointment with a bed bug and pest control expert for an examination and extermination.
